Here in our Remote Employers Masterclass, we’ll be looking at some of the best companies globally that are hiring remotely. It can be daunting for those thinking about changing their working life and starting a remote career, but getting the right job can feel like finding the Holy Grail!

Each masterclass will provide a brief description of the company, along with some features that make them particularly interesting for remoters. There will even be a Q&A video so you can find out what really makes a remote friendly company successful.

For the second installment of our Remote Employers Masterclass, we’ve decided to take a look at OnceHub.

OnceHub is an international, primarily virtual, software-as-a-service company that provides seamless scheduling solutions to help businesses grow. Their goal is to provide a multi-channel engagement hub to businesses both big and small and to allow organizations to easily connect with prospects and customers. With a simple, secure platform you can trust they offer flexible solutions for business communication and the best global engagement suite.  It’s a fully international company with employees in 7 different countries, including the USA, Ireland, England, South Africa, Israel, India, and New Zealand. This means of course that many people are working remotely!

One of their key company principles is “global and remote”, allowing them to hire the best talent from all across the world. They really strive to hire an individual based on their talents and skills, not where they physically live. OnceHub truly understands the benefits that hiring remotely can bring!

Their Recruiting Process

An ideal candidate for OnceHub is an individual who is looking for a career, not just a job. They need a robust internal work ethic along with dedication. It’s also crucial for them to have an interest in continuous learning. Software-as-a-Service is a fast-moving field, so individuals who aren’t interested in keeping up to date probably won’t enjoy the pace of work. An ideal candidate is also ambitious, creative and able to “think outside of the box”. As with most remote jobs, enjoying working with different cultures and learning from them is a plus for any candidate.

OnceHub would appreciate if applicants can include information about why they are interested in working at a SaaS company, why they want to work at OnceHub and why they want to work remotely.

“An ideal candidate is an individual who is looking for a career, not just a job. A candidate who has a strong internal work ethic and dedication to their work, and is interested in continual learning.”

Work Life and Culture

OnceHub actively formulates their company culture with the help of their employees across all 7 countries and 5 continents. One of their key policies is hosting bi-annual company retreats along with a number of informal get-togethers between employees. They consider it part of their company DNA! They last visited Israel and India and are currently planning an upcoming trip to Orlando, Florida.

Typically a company-wide get-together will have a mixture of informal and formal, structured and unstructured activities. At previous retreats they’ve gone rafting down the Jordan River, hiking, dancing, visited historic sites, had dinners and spent time by the pool. The last day is always dedicated to conferences, meetings, and professional development.

To have fun and stay connected in between work trips they’ve established social and interest groups and channels. These range from cooking to video games, helping everyone at OnceHub share all their interests and updates with each other.

Remote-work Challenges

One challenge often faced by companies that work remotely throughout the world is cross-cultural communication. Oncehub explained that their employees are “from different cultures that have different styles of communication, including the level of directness used during communication.” To combat this issue, their employees participated in professional development sessions. They learned to be better cross-cultural communicators and collaborators and as a result, now include this information in their orientation materials for new hires.

“We have also overcome these challenges by having more mediums for employees to cross-culturally communicate and collaborate, such as our retreats, get-togethers, and various social channels/groups.”

Key Advice

We asked OnceHub for their top tips and advice for prospective remote-workers. What should they look out for? Here’s what they had to say:

  1. People should realize that even though you don’t commute to an office, the level and caliber of work should still be as high (or higher) as if you were working from an office.
  2. Unlike when you go into an office location, you won’t physically see or interact with your colleagues, so if you need face-to-face interaction in order to understand project requirements or understand expectations, working from home may not be the best fit.
  3. However, not seeing/physically interacting with colleagues can also increase a person’s focus as well as the amount of time spent working (and not engaging in small talk).
  4. One of the most significant factors people should consider when trying to decide if they want to work remotely is how it would affect their daily lives. When you cut out a commute to a physical office, you have more flexibility with your schedule. This can allow you to have more time to spend and devote to your family, hobbies, interests and maintaining a healthy and positive work-life balance.
